Mabank Academy is a program designed to support students  with unique educational needs in a non-traditional educational setting.  We strive to provide an environment that offers students the tools and knowledge they need to reach their goal of graduation and enter the world beyond high school.

The purpose of the Mabank Academy is drop out prevention and recovery. Students who are accepted into the program have the opportunity to recover credits previously lost and accelerate through courses required for graduation.

The ultimate goal of Mabank Academy is that each student successfully complete all graduation requirements in order to obtain a high school diploma.

Academy is an application-based program and acceptance into the program is not guaranteed.

To begin the process for applying to the Mabank Academy, the student should meet with their assigned counselor to discuss options and to obtain an application to be completed by both the student and the student’s guardian. The student will then return it to the counselor to be considered at the next meeting.

Applications are reviewed at the beginning of each school year and subsequently at the end of each grading term.  Special provisions may be made for emergency placements or unique situations.

Student acceptance into the program is determined by a committee which considers various criteria and makes decisions based on the best interest of students.

ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS

Students enrolled in Mabank Academy are expected to make positive progress towards graduation each day.

Students will work independently through self-paced courses on Edgenuity, an online platform that provides instruction, practice, and assessment.   Academy instructional staff will offer individualized support to students and one-on-one instruction to support student progress.  Students are permitted to work on courses at home as well.

Weekly progress checks are conducted to ensure students are being productive and making positive progress each day.

If students are not making progress, a series of consequences will result beginning with a conference with student to discuss reason for lack of progress and steps to take to get student back on track.  Persistent failure to meet the required 85% progress will result in Academy probation and reassessment of student placement at the next placement meeting scheduled.

Due to the nature of the program, students will likely accelerate through courses required for graduation.  Because of this, most students enrolled in the program will become early graduates of Mabank High School.

BEHAVIORAL EXPECTATIONS

The Mabank Academy is a program within Mabank High School; therefore, students are expected to abide by all rules and guidelines outlined in the MHS Student Handbook in accordance with MISD Board policy.

These expectations include but are not limited to compliance with all dress code and grooming, attendance, and electronic device/technology guidelines.

Failure to comply with these guidelines will result in consequences as outlined in the student handbook.  Persistent behavioral problems or disruptions could result in reassessment of student placement in the Academy program.

Once a student completes all graduation requirements, they are considered an early graduate of Mabank High School.  Early graduates must still abide by all MHS rules and expectations at all school events including but not limited to all Senior activities.

PARTICIPATION

Mabank Academy students are considered students of Mabank High School and will have the same opportunities as other MHS students.  This means that students will have access to transportation services in the morning as well as food services at breakfast and lunch.

Students will be responsible for arranging their own transportation at dismissal.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in all MHS celebrations and ceremonies including homecoming festivities, prom, as well as all Senior activities.

However, students will NOT be able to join or continue participating in extracurricular activities such as MHS clubs and organizations.  They will also be required to drop all athletic periods and will not be allowed to participate in MHS athletic activities including those which meet outside of school hours.

Prior to student acceptance, the committee will discuss CTE or dual credit courses that students are enrolled in to determine whether students should remain in those courses.

If students have completed graduation requirements, they will be considered early graduates; however, they must still abide by all MHS policies and guidelines at all events.
