Dyslexia - What Parents Can Do At Home     

  • Read with your child.
  • Select materials on your child’s independent reading level.
  • Check out books on tape from your local library.
  • Read books and articles on the Internet about dyslexia so you can become informed.
  • Establish a regular routine and place for homework.
  • Break tasks into small parts so your child can accomplish one thing at a time and do them in the correct sequence.
  • Have your child repeat instructions back to you so you know they were listening and understand the task.
  • Stay in touch with your child’s teachers.
  • Talk about the meaning of new words to help develop a strong vocabulary.
  • Build on what your child knows well and show him/her new concepts as needed.
  • Repetition is often needed to make concepts and words fluent.
