Identification
For identification, Mabank ISD will collect both qualitative and
quantitative information.
Selection
Process
The MISD Selection Committee is composed of at least three professional
educators who have been trained in the identification process as defined by
the Texas Education Agency. This includes professional development in the
area of nature and needs and program options.
Professional
Development
All teachers serving in the gifted program have completed a 30 hour training
requirement. In addition to the 30 hours, teachers receive a minimum of six
hours annually in gifted education.
Participation
Participation in the Mabank ISD Gifted and Talented Program is voluntary on
the part of the student and requires written permission of parent/guardian.
Reassessment
Students identified as gifted and placed in the program will be reviewed
annually. Students will continue in the program unless it is determined that
the program is not meeting the educational needs of the student or the
student is not meeting the standards of the program.
Exit Guidelines
It is the goal of the MISD G/T Program to strive for the most appropriate
educational placement. Should it be determined that participation is not
appropriate, exiting procedures are available. Parents will be included in
the final decision.
Furloughs
Students who voluntarily leave the program may be considered on “furlough”
for up to a year. This must be approved by the Campus Committee. The student
may be able to re-enter the program at a later date.
Appeals Procedure
It is the purpose of the MISD Review Committee to hear appeals of the
decisions made by the campus selection committees. The review committee is
the only authority to allow deviation from the entry or exit procedures.
