DYSLEXIA INFORMATION

Do you know a child who has:
• Difficulty reading single words
• Difficulty reading nonsense or unfamiliar words
• Inaccurate or slow, labored oral reading
• Difficulty learning to spell
• Difficulty learning the alphabet
• Difficulty with reading comprehension
• Difficulty in writing down thoughts

If so, the child may have dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a disorder manifested by a difficulty in learning to read, write, or spell, despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence, and sociocultural opportunity.

Mabank ISD provides an organized system of reading support to those children identified with dyslexia. Some children struggle in their early years, while others do not struggle until later when they face more complex language demands (e.g., reading textbooks, grammar).

Mabank ISD will collect the following information:
• Vision screening
• Hearing screening
• Teacher reports of classroom concerns
• Accommodations provided by the teachers
• Report Cards
• Samples of school work
• Parent conferences
• Testing for limited English proficiency
• The K-2 reading instrument
• State student assessment

Depending upon the child’s age and stage of reading development, the following areas related to reading are assessed:
• Reading single words in isolation
• Word decoding (real and nonwords)
• Phonological awareness
• Letter knowledge (name and sounds)
• Rapid naming of words
• Reading fluency and accuracy
• Reading comprehension
• Spelling

Issues for Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2

Some children demonstrate difficulties during early reading instruction. The most common source of instructional help for early struggling readers is through the Texas Primary Reading Inventory-TPRI. The TPRI is administered to all K-2 children. Grades 1 and 2 are screened at the beginning and end of year while Kindergarten students are screened mid-year and end of year. If, on the basis of the TPRI results, children who are at risk of reading difficulties are provided an accelerated intensive reading program that appropriately addresses the student’s reading difficulties.

Intervention Assistance Teams Or 504 Committees

Once the information is gathered and a child is in need of intervention, a team of knowledgeable persons determines if the student has dyslexia. The team must be knowledgeable about:

• The child being assessed
• The reading process
• Dyslexia and related disorders
• Dyslexia instruction
• State and federal guidelines
• The assessments used
• The meaning of the collected data

Instructional Decisions

Mabank ISD will provide the child with an appropriate instructional program. These teachers and aides will be trained in strategies that utilize intensive, multisensory, phonetic methods and a variety of writing and spelling components. Parents will be informed of all services available to the student.
